Ferbane Bog

Ferbane bog is a relatively large, domed, raised bog covering 153 hectares near Ferbane town in County Offaly. Uncut high bog dominates the site (120ha) and this is surrounded by a narrow band of cutover (33ha) resulting from previous turf-cutting. While Ferbane Bog supports very wet, active raised bog habitat that is actively forming peat, the 16,000m of drains that traverse the south and east of the bog have caused significant drying out of the bog surface. Recently, most of the drains on the high bog have been blocked under the Living Bog LIFE project.

The surrounding cutover mainly consists of scrub and low to moderate intensity grassland.

Ferbane Bog is protected as a Special Area of Conservation (SAC).
