Raheenmore Bog

Raheenmore Bog is a classic example of a midland raised bog and one of the deepest bogs left in Ireland. It covers over 210 hectares and the peat is up to 15m in places. The total area of uncut high bog is over 130ha while the remaining 79ha is mostly cutover bog resulting from previous turf-cutting. It was cut in the past but to a smaller extent than most of its neighbours and is one of the more intact bogs in the east of the country.

Deep peripheral and arterial drains surround the bog, some as deep as 4m. Peat-cutting along the margins of the bog ceased many years ago but old face banks and cutover drainage continue to cause negative impacts on the high bog habitats.

The surrounding cutover in generally reclaimed to low/moderate intensity grassland.

Raheenmore Bog is situated about 5 km from Daingean in Co. Offaly and is protected as a Special Area of Conservation (SAC).
